Computer use 'can lead to eye disease'
Long periods of time in front of a computer monitor can lead to eye disease, researchers have claimed.
Staring at a screen could be related to glaucoma, a condition which if left untreated can lead to blindness, a new study suggests.
Researchers at the Toho University School of Medicine in Tokyo, found the risk of heavy computer use and glaucoma was particularly strong among those workers who were short-sighted.
Glaucoma is more common in old age, and happens when the optic nerve in the eye is damaged, leading to visual abnormalities.
The exact causes are unknown, but potential risk factors include smoking and high blood pressure.
The researchers concluded: "Computer stress is reaching higher levels than have ever been experienced before.
"In the next decade, therefore, it might be important for public health professionals to show more concern about myopia and visual field abnormalities in heavy computers users."
Great, more things for me to worry about.
