  • Wah Lum Northern Praying Mantis..

Anyone know anything about this place? They offer a full time training course in their temple type thing in florida.. sounds like a good place to prepare for a training trip to china! Or at least good for those that live in the US

Does northern praying mantis bare any relation to shaolin?

I have a friend who was going to do that, but it cost too much. As far as Northern Mantis resembling Shaolin, it depends- they will obviously have shared elements.

It is just forms. If you are looking to be a fighter this isn't the place. If you are looking for cool forms and physical fitness join tomorrow.

Grandmaster Chan Pui is this school's head. He has a dedication stone at shaolin, I think. I have been to some tournaments in which his students have competed and they are Fing awesome. They killed all of the competitors. Granted this was in Ohio and I don't see alot of great chinese martial artists here in the mid-west. But they were definatly well trained. Check their website out http://www.wahlum.com/wah_lum_history.htm

My teacher's teacher, and his teacher (uh.. two generations up the line from me) are both ex-Wah lum. It is a forms school - no real apps or fighting, no theory. The form work is good, so if that's all you want it's a great place to learn plenty of sets, both open hand and lots of different weapons.
Whatever doesn't kill me had better be able to run damn fast.

the last trip i made to florida i visited Wah Lum. let me say this, Chan Pui is good. as for what i saw, well, all i know is every senior student i saw i know i could have taken them apart, the system is much like northern shaolin in the way they train and in the way they train to fight, lolo. which in other words means, lots of acrobatic bullshit that is useless against a real fighter, unless you like to play tag. and the rest of the sparring and what not was bullshit, atleast from what i saw of it. and they idiolize the northern shaolin monks which at the time i thought was cool cause they had nice pictures of just about every damn monk in the world.

regardless, its an O.K kung fu school. its typical really, youd be just aswell of learning judo or karate or something though when it comes to fighting prowess.

                      in other words..its nothing special.

I agree with Maestro. All forms no fighting. Just like the monk schools save Xinghongs and yanlei's.

This asks the question what is the purpose of your training? Physical fitness? Fighting? Philosophy?

If it is fitness and philosophy this is the school for you. If not go find a good hungar school at your local strip mall. Make sure the teacher is a big guy with a large stomach. Basically an egg with a belt. That was for you maestro. I joke that way because I have been to a couple of tourneys and many times from my birds eye veiw, I notice these fat hung gar sifu's. How could you be that big and be a sifu? Why do I notice it mostly with hungar? lolol oh and Aikido.

i dont judge fighting ability by physical fitness. of course i would be more weary of a very well conditioned guy my age(21) then i would some pudgy guy with a black sash. but, i mean you never know. i saw on ripleys believe it or not this dim mak specialist who looked like fat albert..only he was white. the guy most likely wasnt the ultimate fighter or anything but all he had to do was touch you and it was over. on ripleys he had about 7 of his students just get ko'ed by his touch. now this means something, im not saying hes the craziest again, but, if this individual practices a skill like this which is lethal to a level where this is all that need be done to put someone down, i will respect him.

he also had extraordinarily fast hands for a fat guy. but the dim mak skill he had was very good, even though i doubt he used any iron skills to back it up.

again, you can judge fighting skill on many levels. but to me, the most important thing about cma is to be healthy and a powerful fighter. health comes first, fighting comes second. so alot of these fat so called "sifus" can do what they like, but they are also a reflection of their own actions or maybe nonaction..

what i say about wah lum though i base on my own understanding of combat, and what i saw was not good, for the most part i kept my attention away from the people doing forms that had obviously been doing them for a long time when i know i could have jumped up and learned the same techniques in that same day and not to mention showed them up. i kept my attention away from the peeps doing cartwheels and backflips and whatever, that stuff is cool and i like it but, why train like that? my attention was on the big senior students sparring. and in a word they were whack and this post is getting to long

Hungar is a cognitave for "hunger." Perhaps they are more closely related than simple synonyms...LOL
