    i noticed that no matter how heavy your step is, altough good for rooting and transferring power, a heavy step is more easily slipped/tripped, and plus, the heavier your step the harder you will fall when tripped as in de ashi harai or kosoto gari of judo http://judoinfo.com/images/animation...eashibarai.htm http://judoinfo.com/images/animation...kosotogari.htm
    though not very useful in judo, light stepping can prevent you from taking a nasty fall, such as running a curved path on wet grass, or retreating from a barrage of attacks.

    You should look into taiji or bagua to learn more about this...

    We do a lot of work on how we step in my Yang taiji class.

      Yeah...stepping is important, that is, in knowing how to do it...but both methods are useful. baji uses a lot of effective stomping -- dropping all your weight on the opponent --as well as mantis and others at times.
