weird...."the chinese government should get over their prejudice of the roman catholic church" so says this new bishop...uh didnt these same christians royally **** the people of china up (and everywhere else they went) when they went to spread therir gospel. I read this book about the boxer rebellion and one of the reasons why the boxer rebellion went on was because of the murders and brainwashing the christians were doing to their friends and families....and the irony is i was raised catholic

I don't know if it was Cathiloc, it could have been Jesuit. They were really active back in the day.

Either way, that's no (real) reason for China not to openly embrace Catholicism. I'd pin it more on China being Socialist, where the only real religion is the governement.

I could be wrong, things could be way different. But atleast that is a real idea that the Chinese can hold in terms of people being alive to enforce the Cultural Revolution's goals.

It's a central idea of classical communism that religion is counterrevolutionary. It was Karl Marx who said "religion is the opiate of the masses".

This is one of the arguments that Christians bring up against atheists all the time, when we're arguing about the separation of church and state. That is, look what happens when religion has been removed from society in the past: Communism and Nazism.

Thanks for the clear up. But are you sure it's Communism, not Socialism? Communism is an economic system, correct? And to my knowledge, Nazism was(is) a socialist philosophy.

Eh, that kind of post hoc reasoning in that argument is the kind that only sheep would follow. And it would be the same if the roles were reversed.

Socialism is either a sort of "moderate" communism or a necessary step in the journey towards actual communism, depending on who you ask. China is socialist but heading more towards capitalism rather than communism. And yes, the Nazis were a socialist party. All of these words are open to all sorts of interpretations and are ever debated by the intellectual hoity-toity types.

Eh, that kind of post hoc reasoning in that argument is the kind that only sheep would follow. And it would be the same if the roles were reversed.
Right. Plus, it doesn't see the difference between the simple separation of church and state and the forcible removal of religion from all aspects of society by the state. Which is a pretty obvious difference to those who care to think about it.

It's a littlle more than just philosphical perspectives China needs to work on pre-Beijing !!..... Have u guys seeen those dirty crowded trains they may not even offer you a seat over 24-30 hrs on ??!!... Some whinging American b*tch is going to whinge and sue and I'm gon cheer my ass off!!!...

Anyway, this whole conformist sheep mindest is a prized state of maturity there. I don't think u guys realise in actuality how hard it's gotta be to control that many ppl who are suffering both natural elements and dire shortage of just about everything. Stfu and let me think is a something they've had engrained since Mao. As fuc*ing rediculous as it is, it works and you just cant haave ppl demanding blood from stones. I think that's why buddhist and athiest views take so well... don't fu*ing cry , cause no -one's coming, detatch from your need to believe you need more than we 've got, let your survival nature guide u and everyone's happy!!...

I don't really agree that ppl should be deprived a little spiritual comfort ( having had my managers and colleagues sob and cheer when they realised I saw them going through that) , but it is the way it is. What do you?? Comfort a few and let em all starve or play sit down stfu and we all live?? ... There's something to be said for emotion impartiality... least they have the wto giving them a shot though....

Despite my better judgement, I went ahead to read your post, BL (incase you haven't realized yet, you're on my ignore list.)

Basically, you're saying that it's okay for people to blindly follow a single idea because they are having hard times? I called them sheep. And as far as that goes, it's true. You said so yourself, I believe...

But I don't know. One second you sound like you're attacking me for being condecending, the next, you're implying the same things I've said...

I thnk BL has been spending too much time in that society and its propaganda is starting to work on her. To counter argue perhaps we have been in this "democratic" society too long and have fallen under the spell of its propaganda...it's everywhere.

no people here are just brain washed under the guise of not knowing anything else, an ideal known as freedom, and some belief that America is better than the rest of the world.

"Freedom" here is just a buzzword. It used to be the defining principle of this country. Now, we're defined by being rich and comfortable, and the purpose of our country is to make sure we stay rich and comfortable. That whole freedom thing is just what got us to this point.

But that is the start of an entirely unrelated rant, and this thread seems to have gone fairly off-topic already. So I'll bite my tongue. Er, fingers.

I'm not really going to bite my fingers.

Exactly. Why some of us think that's a good thing, I have no idea.
