Bizarre Game Targets Women: Hunting for Bambi: Part 1

(July 10) -- It's a new form of adult entertainment, and men are paying thousands of dollars to shoot naked women with paint ball guns. They're coming to Las Vegas to do it. This bizarre new sport has captured the attention of people around the world, but Channel 8 Eyewitness News reporter LuAnne Sorrell is the only person who has interviewed the game's founder.

George Evanthes has never been hunting. "Originally I'm from New York. What am I going to hunt? Squirrels? Someone's cats? Someone's dogs? I don't think so," said Evanthes. Now that he's living in Las Vegas, he's finally getting his chance to put on his camouflage, grab a rifle and pull the trigger. But what's in his scope may surprise you. He's not hunting ducks or deer, he's hunting naked woman.

"I've done this three times," says Nicole, one of the three women allowing themselves to be shot at. Two other women, Gidget and Skyler, claim they have done this seven times.

Hunting for Bambi is the brainchild of Michael Burdick. Men pay anywhere from $5000 to $10,000 for the chance to come to the middle of the desert to shoot what they call "Bambis" with a paint ball gun. Burdick says men have come from as far away as Germany. The men get a video tape of their hunt to take home and show their friends.

Burdick says safety is a concern, but the women are not allowed to wear protective gear -- only tennis shoes.

Burdick says hunters are told not to shoot the women above the chest, but he admits not all hunters follow the rules. "The main goal is to be as true to nature as possible. I don't go deer hunting and see a deer with a football helmet on so I don't want to see one on my girl either," said Burdick.

The paint balls that come out of the guns travel at about 200 miles-per-hour. Getting hit with one stings with clothes on, and when they hit bare flesh, they are powerful enough to draw blood.

Evanthes shot one of the women and says, "I got the one with the biggest rack."

Gidget is the one who took the paint ball shot to the rear. She says, "It hurt. It really hurt. I didn't think it was going to be that bad." When asked if she cried she says,"yeah, a little bit."

So why do women agree to strip down and run around the desert dodging paint balls? Nicole says it's good money. "I mean it's $2,500 if you don't get hit. You try desperately not to and it's $1000 if you do," said Nicole.

The men and women say this is all good, clean fun, but in Part 2 of this special report, reporter LuAnne Sorrell speaks with a psychologist who says for some men playing out this sexual aggression may lead to other more violent acts against women.

Bizarre Game Targets Women: Hunting for Bambi: Part 2

"Hunting for Bambi" is the newest form of adult entertainment in Las Vegas. Men are paying thousands of dollars to come here and hunt naked women. Could playing out this type of violence lead to even more serious types of violence against women? Channel Eight Eyewitness News reporter LuAnne Sorrell takes a look.

(July 16) Michael Burdick, the founder of HuntingForBambie.com, explains the game to three women early one Monday morning. "You have to collect four flags throughout the course. Some are easy for you and some are not easy," said Burdick.

The woman begin stripping down to their tennis shoes and start running to dodge the paint balls that go buzzing by.

"We got a hit," said George Evanthes, who just shot and hit one of the women in the behind. "It was sexy. Let's put it that way," said Evanthes.

The women who take part in this bizarre game get paid $2,500 if they escape unscathed. Even if a paintball hits them, they walk away with $1,000.

"As you can see this is not lethal, and it wasn't meant to hurt anybody. Just good clean fun," said Evanthes.

Burdick says the majority of the men who pay the $5,000 to $10,000 to play the game are the submissive, quiet type. "For the individual who's used to saying 'I can't go out with the boys tonight' or the wimp of America, it's a chance for him to come out and vent his aggression and really take charge and have some fun."

Marv Glovinsky is a clinical psychologist. He says Hunting for Bambi is every man's fantasy come true. "You might think of all men as little boys who have never grown up, so they entertain their adolescent fantasies and they go through life being adolescents on the hunt."

But Glovinsky says this so called game that mixes violence with sexuality can be dangerous for men who can not distinguish fantasy from reality, and acting out the violence in this game could lead to them acting out real violence.

"If you're blurring reality and fantasy and you can't make the distinction and you're emotions over power your intellect or your higher mental function, your going to get into trouble, and if you have a control problem to boot, that's really going to cause problems." Problems, he adds, like beating, raping or even hunting women with a real gun.

Hunter Evanthes disagrees, "This is just a game. Get serious, get real." But some worry it's a game, which may have consequences that go far beyond the playing field.

      Part 3 and 4

From channel 8 News Las Vegas...
(Of course they had to do the story all week...)

Hunting for Bambi: Parts 3 and 4: Mayor Blasts Local Bambi Hunt Game

      Hunting for Bambi Part 3
Channel 8's exclusive story about the adult paint ball business, "Hunting for Bambi" has created an uproar across the country. The story about men hunting down women with paint ball guns is now one of the most searched-for-articles on the world wide web and the topic of discussion on several national news programs. While many people are interested, most are outraged. Others say the whole thing is a hoax, and that the hunt we covered was a publicity stunt.

(July 16) -- Channel 8's exclusive story about the adult paint ball business, "Hunting for Bambi" has created an uproar across the country. The story about men hunting down women with paint ball guns is now one of the most searched-for-articles on the world wide web. Today it was the topic of discussion on several national news programs. While many people are interested, most are outraged. Others say the whole thing is a hoax, and that the hunt is a publicity stunt. Eyewitness News reporter LuAnne Sorrell, who broke the story, went looking for proof.

"I've been up for three days," says "Hunting for Bambi" founder Michael Burdick. The media can't get enough of "Hunting for Bambi." Stations from across the country, and as far away as Germany, have been calling Burdick for interviews.

Wednesday, Eyewitness News caught up with him between his satellite interviews on "The O'Reilly Factor" and MSNBC, and Burdick says, "Tomorrow night is Diane Sawyer. I'm getting tons of e-mails from women wanting to be Bambis."

But not all of the e-mails have been positive. At Channel 8 we've received more than 600,000 hits on our website on Monday alone. E-mails are coming in from outraged women's groups and furious paint ball players.

Many people are questioning whether this absurd new sport is real. The snopes.com website is one of several which call the whole thing a big hoax. Eyewitness News reporter LuAnne Sorrell went back to the scene, and asked Burdick directly if he had staged the hunt for the cameras, to which Burdick replied, "No. I'll tell you I wish I was that clever."

He admits that five weeks ago he kicked off his website only to sell his videos, but, he says, in only days men were calling and e-mailing, saying "I want to be in a video, I want to hunt one of the girls, that would be awesome. I'll pay lots of money." He continued, "The hunt you went on was exactly the 18th hunt. We have done 20 hunts since you, and we've booked one for Friday and Saturday."

To verify Burdick's comments, we contacted the company that hosts the HuntingForBambi website. That California company asked us not to use their name, but confirmed that they had actually processed orders for several so-called "hunts" in the past and they continue to get new orders in.

But a lot of people are outraged that hunting naked women is being allowed to take place in Las Vegas. Eyewitness News has learned that the city has received so many calls that they now have launched an investigation.

Jim DiFiori is the Business Service Manager for the City of Las Vegas. His office is in charge of issuing business licenses. DiFiori told Eyewitness News, "We're doing an investigation on the issues and we hope to complete this investigation in a very short period of time."

In response to the investigation Burdick said, "I am absolutely positive they are not going to find anything, because there is nothing to hide. I'll open our door at anytime to anybody." Prostitution is not part of his business, Burdick says, and claims his business is 100% legitimate, but we decided to do some digging of our own to see just how squeaky clean his business is.

Real Men Outdoor Productions, which is the company name listed on the "Hunting For Bambi" website, is incorporated in the state of Nevada. We also found a valid business license under that name that was issued last month by the City of Las Vegas, but the hunt Eyewitness News went on last week was outside of the city limits, and the license that was issued was for sell hunting videos over the Internet, not for hunting women with paint ball guns.

"Any type of nude operation needs to be considered for zoning purposes as a sexually-oriented business," said DiFiori. A special license is needed for that. Additional licenses may also be need for an escort service and a paint ball business. Burdick says he sells video tapes of all of his hunts to the hunters, so the business license he has, is the only one he needs.

The city's investigation is expected to be completed by the end of this week.

Hunting for Bambi Part 4: Mayor Blasts Local Bambi Hunt Game
The City of Las Vegas continues its investigation into the shocking business that involves hunting naked women with paint ball guns. Mayor Goodman had some choice words for the game's founder and the men who play this game.

(July 17) -- The City of Las Vegas is investigating the business called "Hunting for Bambi." So far, city officials say the private property where the hunts on naked women are staged may not be within city limits. Mayor Oscar Goodman spoke with Channel 8 Eyewitness News reporter LuAnne Sorrell. He had some harsh words for the man who started the business and those men who are paying to play.

Mayor Oscar Goodman usually loves a good controversy that draws attention to the City of Las Vegas, but he says shooting women with paint balls goes too far.

According to Goodman, “Any guy that's going to pay $10,000 to shoot a ping-pong ball, he's a real idiot and certainly not a real man.” Goodman continues, “If they're using these balls that can hurt people and I understand these paint balls can hurt people and take out someone's eye, and it's happening in our city we're going to stop it.”

Avid paint ball players like Matt Spengler say it's also giving the sport of paint ball a bad name, “I think at the least possible give the girls protective gear.”

The women who were hunted used to only be allowed to wear tennis shoes, but after getting complaints from the paint ball industry, they are now allowed to wear eye masks.

Michael Burdick, the founder of Hunting for Bambi, has a valid Las Vegas business license, but it's only for the sale of videos. The city is currently investigating whether Burdick is breaking any laws. But Goodman says he doesn't believe the hunts are occurring within city limits.

Goodman says, “I think it's unfortunate, if it's real, but I think this guy could be laughing all the way to the bank.”

The company that services the Hunting for Bambi website told Eyewitness News that the hunting business is definitely real. They gave us a copy of orders placed over the web site. The copy shows the names of people and addresses of those who've made recent purchases. We're told the $24.00 orders are for videos, and the $2500 orders are for non-refundable deposits--deposits required to book a hunt.

Michael Burdick says he has not only been contacted from people wanting to buy videos and hunts but people also wanting to invest in his company.

      (This is the best part)

Note: A lot of the complaints Eyewitness News and Burdick received were from paint ball players who were upset that the women being hunted do not wear protective gear. Burdick says he's decided to make one concession. The women being hunted will now wear protective eyewear.

Las Vegas Groups Protest Naked 'Bambi' Hunts

(July 18: Reuters) - Outraged by a Las Vegas company that claims to offer men a chance to stalk and shoot naked women in the Nevada desert with paintball guns, women's groups and government agencies were scrambling to find a way to shut down such "Bambi" hunts.

"As soon as I found out about this, I called for an investigation," Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said. "Las Vegas is a place where anything goes, but this crosses the line if this is real."

Real Men Outdoor Productions Inc., insists it is doing nothing illegal and only providing another variety of adult entertainment in a city celebrated for sin.

But critics, some of whom maintain that the hunts may be a hoax to drum up publicity for sales of a "Hunting for Bambi" video, say it should be shut down.

The company has a Las Vegas business license to sell a $20 video of hunters chasing nude women through the woods as a spoof on hunting videos that feature men hunting deer.

That video was staged, Real Men spokesman David Krekelberg said, but it gave rise to the idea of hosting hunts with paintball guns and charging men $10,000 for such weekend tours.

Krekelberg said the company has so far hosted 18 "Bambi" hunts in undisclosed locations around Las Vegas. In each, a hunter faces off with two women dressed in nothing but sneakers, each of whom receive $1,000 and can earn up to $2,500 if they make it through the hour without being struck by the paintball, he said.

But Jodi Tyson, director of the Nevada Coalition Against Sexual Violence called the "Bambi" hunts offensive, dangerous and exploitative.

The world's largest paintball products maker, Brass Eagle Inc, has also protested the hunts.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (http://www.blm.gov/nhp/) is also looking into speculation that the hunts have taken place without permits on public property. About 90 percent of Nevada is owned by the federal government.

"In our patrol of the lands, if they're out there without a permit and we find them, we would cite them," BLM spokeswoman Jo Simpson said.

Krekelberg denied that any of the hunts had occurred on federal property, saying only that they occur on private estates in southern Nevada. He refused to say where out of fear of sabotage, noting that "there are nuts out there who would come in and throw a wrench in there."

He also asserted the women were not being mistreated, noting that they can wear goggles and helmets for protection if they wish. (July 18: By Steve Friess of Reuters)

                  and the story continues..

(From KVBC Channel 3 Las Vegas)
Is Hunting for Bambi a Hoax?

Las Vegas, Nevada, July 17 - It's the story that's caused an uproar among women's groups and put a black eye on the city of Las Vegas. But is it all a hoax?

It's the story that's caused an uproar among women's groups and put a black eye on the city of Las Vegas. But is it all a hoax. News 3's Dana Wagner dug deeper into claims that the man behind the "Hunting for Bambi" video may have fooled a local television station into giving him free advertising to sell more videos.
One of our competitors did the story last week on a company that sets up hunts for naked women using paintball rifles. The story set off an avalanche of national publicity.
On the company's website, they're asking people to pay up to ten thousand dollars for each hunt. To find out if it's real, we decided to find the man that went with a local TV station last week to hunt for women, armed with a paintball rifle.
"It was almost super realistic. At first, I didn't believe this was going to happen." George Evanthes one hunter says, "didn't believe it until the girls actually came out."
George Evanthes says he paid four thousand dollars to hunt women with a paintball gun. Some people acuse him of being a shill, used to pull a hoax on a local Las Vegas TV station. Afterall, he lives in a rented, 400 square foot condo on West Bonanza. Leaving many to wonder how could he afford such an expensive hunt.
"It's simple. Since my expenses aren't high," explains Evanthes, "I could do a lot of things other people can't."
But a website that debunks urban myths, snopes.com, thinks it was all a set-up to sell more videos for the company. saying: "It's all too easy for hoaxsters to fool reporters with demonstrations staged for their benefit."
If it was a set-up, it's worked to perfection. The head of the company that makes the Bambi hunting videos, Michael Burdick, is getting bombarded with requests to appear on national TV. He says he's also getting numerous requests to set up real hunts from people all over the world. He says hunting for Bambi started as a parody of hunting videos, but turned into something real.
"Yes it is. It is absolutely 100% real." Michael Burdick says on footage the company sells on it's web site.
But the head of the YWCA says he's just trying to sell video tapes.
"Frankly, I still have to believe it's a put-on." Patricia Ireland of the YWCA said on MSNBC, who would be so stupid to pay up to ten thousand dollars to hunt a naked woman?"
Back to George Evanthes. He's in the same business as Michael Burdick but says he doesn't know him and says he's not a pawn to sell tapes. Just a guy with thousands of dollars to throw around.
"Well, I don't like to get into my personal finances." says Evanthes.
The City of Las Vegas is conducting an investigation into whether any laws have been broken. But mayor Oscar Goodman admits there may be nothing the city can do to stop the company.
I do not have a psychiatrist and I do not want one, for the simple reason that if he listened to me long enough, he might become disturbed.

We need to follow this guy's business model, lol

LAS VEGAS — A promoter who offered to take men on "Hunting for Bambi" safaris in which they could hunt down naked young women with paintball guns admits that it was a hoax and now faces misdemeanor charges, the mayor said Friday.

Promoter Michael Burdick (search) could get six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for operating without a proper business license, Mayor Oscar Goodman (search) said.

"I'll do everything I can to see this man is punished for trying to embarrass Las Vegas," Goodman said.

Burdick called the misdemeanor summons a waste of taxpayer money.

"I have a license; it's hanging on my wall," Burdick told The Associated Press before cutting off questions.

Burdick found himself in the crosshairs of women's groups after he told a Las Vegas TV station that he was selling reservations to men willing to pay $5,000 to $10,000 to hunt down naked women in the desert.

Las Vegas officials investigated, and said Burdick admitted that the safaris were just a hoax intended to promote the "Hunting for Bambi" (search) videos that Burdick sells. The videos are marketed as depicting nude women being hunted by men who have paid for the privilege.

But the mayor said the videos actually show "actors and actresses, and there wasn't even the real shooting of paint balls."

John Redlein, an assistant city attorney, said Burdick offered the hunts at high prices to discourage anyone from actually booking a safair, and he told investigators his Internet site could not even accept credit card charges in the amount necessary to reserve a hunt.

A report on Burdick's "Hunting for Bambi" first aired July 10 on KLAS.

And I thought Steve and I held the job of embarassing Las Vegas...

                      Bambi is a prostitute???

Hunting For Bambi Operators Now Looking At Prostitution Charges

New allegations of prostitution emerged as the Las Vegas City Council ordered a disciplinary hearing for the operators of the "Hunting For Bambi" hoax. News 3's Steve Crupi reports investigators say the business was selling more than just sexy video tapes.

In yet another amended complaint from the city attorney, we're learning how city investigators posed as customers, called the Hunting For Bambi phone number, and were allegedly offered sex in exchange for money. Before the plug was pulled on the Hunting For Bambi website, investigators learned that it was selling more than videos and more than those fictitious paintball hunts of naked women.

The latest complaint from the city chronicles a phone call made by an investigator to a phone number posted on the Hunting For Bambi website. The investigator spoke to a woman named Skylar and asked her what services were available for his friend. "Donations are $500 for full service for one hour."

"I am new at this, what did full service mean?"

"you know, full service. He will be satisfied."

                      "Sexually satisfied?"

                      "Yes."

With this new information in hand, the Las Vegas City Council voted to schedule a hearing next month. "Two meetings from today gives everyone plenty of time to prepare." At that hearing, the mayor will have some tough questions for the Hunting For Bambi creator Michael Burdick, and his girlfriend Lakana Campbell, whose name is on the company's business license.

Right now, the Hunting For Bambi folks are not returning our calls. But it doesn't look like they're doing much business either. As we first reported last night, it appears their website is at least temporarily shut down. Despite all the publicity certain news outlets gave to the Hunting For Bambi paintball hunts, Bambi Promoter Michael Burdick has still failed to produce any evidence that actual hunts ever took place.
