Well, I have no doubt there were influences both ways between China and Japan, but to claim that Chinese martial arts are the 'root' and 'foundation' of Japanese martial arts as Yang does is just silly. Yes, techniques themselves are similar, but you will find that in any martial art....doesn't take much philosophy to put a person in pain, only so many ways to do so. I'm looking at training methodology....if one were to make the connection there, gongfu and kalariyapayatt would have much more in common than gongfu and aikido or judo.

But all of this is moot....Yang, writing as an academic, shouldn't be making such ill-informed comments about Japanese martial arts.....I wonder if he has any experience with Aikido or Judo besides reading about them?
