  • Genuine Buddhist training in Shaolin

Thanks for your reply! Yep, Yangshuo is a great place with a very different lifestyle to the one I had back home. A long awaited change.

I guess I'm in no hurry to go at the moment, I just want to be sure I find the right place or person first. There are so many stories about people who have been to Shaolin and come back dissapointed because all they saw was commercialism or the like. A great deal of reports suggest that it is no longer the real Shaolin of the past, and this is dissapointing to hear.

For me, my quest is something of a lifelong dream. I have studied with a very good Chinese Master in Australia and I am studying with Master Gao (aged 78) and his twin sons (aged 47)at the moment. Their Kung Fu is called Bu Di Zhen and was developed by their great great Grandfather who was a Shaolin Monk who also studied at Wudan. He merged the two together to form their unique family style which focusses on both internal and external kung fu coming from the centre which is Chi Gong. Their Chi Gong forms the basis for all their styles. Both the sons trained at Shaolin with Jet Li and the father was in the Peking Opera for 20 years. At 78 he still does backflips and still breaks river stones with a punch. From a kung fu perspective, I can learn a lot from them. Unfortunately, they do not offer any spiritual guidance or teachings of buddhism, which is what I am seeking. Cultivation of the body is only one part and cultivation of the mind is more important.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I believe there must be some authentic teachers at Shaolin or somewhere in China and I would like to try and find them.

Any help you give me would be fantastic, I'll be sure to take you rock climbing next time you come to Yangshuo!

Shaolin's true Buddhist teacher was Shi De Ren. I had met this guy years ago, before he "moved on" from Shaolin (apparently, he didn't get along with Yongxin, as did most of the other, older masters). Shi De Ren had been responsible for training just about all of Shaolin's young monks and other trainees, for many, many years.

At this point, with the changing of the guard, I don't know who is responsible for Buddhist training now.

If there is any organized teaching at all.
Experienced Community organizer. Yeah, let's choose him to run the free world. It will be historic. What could possibly go wrong...
