  • 72 arts

I heard a lot of talk about the “72 arts of shaolin” so I decided to do some research on it. Besides the regular fictional bullshit, I found a book on the topic. It was an interesting read but then again I wasn’t sure if this was another bullshit text or if it had some credibility. So here is my question, those of you who spent time in the shaolin, had any of you heard or done any of the 72 arts. I know that iron body skills are done but are any others skills thought.

I think there are some legitimate training ideas in that book, but they are also a little outdate imho. Other than the "iron" skills, I would stick with more contemporary means of strength and conditioning just because it is more accessible and easier to understand.

peeps in the jet li shaolin documentary were practicing a decent amount of those skills. um, i dunno if they were all monks or what but in the documentary they were

anyway, alot of the skills in the 72 consumate arts arent hard to understand and usually work off different types of "strength" alot of them dont really work on strength at all they are more about developing a certain ging or energy. or they are for developing certain parts of the body as weapons etc all kinds of stuff

none of its outdated though...i wouldnt go that far because how many of us actually practice the arts and are qualified to say so intelligently.

most of the skills like i said before dont have much to do with what the idea of contemporary strength is and are more about fighting skills then getting strong.

Yeah I saw that documentary as well, hence my question. Also keep in mind that that documentary was made for Chinese audience primarily. The narrator has some nice comments about the fighting sequences such as “woah, no one can beat him” and such so we can see where skepticism comes from. But how much of this is actually thought to foreigners. Is this even encouraged or do you have to specifically ask for it.
All in all, if this was true and if it was thought to foreigners, this would compliment any fighting style brilliantly, even wushu.

(Yes I know it is used with MA)

Anyone care to list these "72 arts"? Anyone know the Chinese name for this?

Not sure where you'd learn the "swimming and diving" skill in the Shaolin area.

For the two years or so that I spent training there, I never saw nor heard of many of these things. Not to say that they don't exist, but they just don't seem to be focused on that much now.

Hey doc, here is an idea, why don’t you ask Decheng if he knows anything about this. Since we have Chinese names, it would be easy for him to identify whether it is being done or taught.

Well, let me rephrase that, because my post did not come out as planned.

I've never heard of anyone mention the phrase "72 arts". However, some of those "arts" are taught at Shaolin, albeit buried within the Ji Ben Gong and other things such as some forms. It's not like they have a class on the "seventy two arts". Some of these things mentioned here are just part of the basic maneuvers. And also, of interest, you see some of these terms in other martial arts: ie, the "iron broom sweep" found in Kenpo, "iron palm" and "Iron arm" found in Seidokan, etc.

Decheng might get here in a few weeks; he's in Massachussetts now (he called me when he arrived to the US, thought I was in Thailand). I'm sure when I ask him, he'll give me that blank look that he sometimes does when asked about these western applied terms for Chinese things, and then proceed to demonstrate all of those above skills when we review stuff...
