    Well, what is the alternative?

Nazi Germany readily demonstrated the horrors of not using animals....

Seen from one perspective, if people get sick and you can't cure them, then death is a natural and perfectly acceptable thing. There is no reason why humans should torment, torture and eventually kill other living beings against their will. Why should humans be better entitled to life and comfort than other animals?

Personally, I think it is also fundamentally wrong to meddle with the order of nature, prolonging the longevity of one species at the cost of others. Only take a look at the world now and compare it to the world 200 years ago, and see what has become of things such as biodiversity, fertility of the earth or animals, quality of crops, etc.

In ancient chinese philosophy, living in harmony with nature was the utmost goal. But nature is unforgiving, and anyone seeking to harmonize with nature should be ready to die at any time.

But from a buddhist or christian point of view, although the animals used for testing are not doing it out their own free will, they are still blessed. Those who are the victims of crimes and sins are more blessed and more blissful than those who commit the crime.
And perhaps the animals would be grateful to give their life, if they but knew that it saved people.

touchy subject. i am generally opposed to animal testing but I can see why the benefits cause people to be indifferent about the suffering it causes.

I think that if someone is under the impression that there's something natural about voluntarily foregoing treatment that would save their life, and instead decides to die for the sake of rabbits, I say, let natural selection take its course.

Why should humans be better entitled to life and comfort than other animals?
For the same reason that lions are more entitled to life and comfort than zebras. In other words, no reason at all. Mother nature's a bitch.

Well, i am not specialist on the question...

Doc, to answer in general way seems difficult 4 me. I guess there must be ethical and legal criterias used in western medicine. What r they? On what r they based, what r their essences... Could u b more specific, on which cases u believe to be useful and which cases not, in theory and in reality??

            Thanks

Millions of chickens have sacrificed their potential lives through the making of vaccines. Vaccines that have essentially eradicated polio and smallpox, and that help us with flu, and many many childhood diseases.

              Think about it.

OK, Liu. I've had a change of heart.

I can get into this PETA stuff. Gonna have to see how I can sign up. Not sure how I'm going to do with all those veggies, but, sometimes you have to sacrifice...

Well vaccines seem a pretty good idea, but my questionm is how smallpox or whatever appeared. It doesnt seem elephant suffer from smallpox or whatevere dont they???

also when did such epidemic like pest or spanish flu appeared in history? did it always exist in human communities around the world

Also i d like to know about life expectancy in old ages...

Lastly what was the role of animals in greek medicine. It seems chinese medicine and modern western medicine r very linked (unfortunatly?) 2 animals while ayurveda does not... ( 2 stay focused on the north...). Is it correct? Do u know about ayurveda? What do u think、 Any websites?

Laslty second, any website about asian psychology??? There is one in french that is qu8ite good, www.lacanchine.com

Well asger, i kind of like ur trend. doc said alre ady a bit the same that to make animals suffer for superficial prolongation of life seems absu rd

u point out asger, i think, that in the material w orld of animals, apparently, there is no need for docs, medicine or prolonging life

so again i ask u doc, please tell me ur view on wh y so many disease appear in human realm???

                        W h a t t h e h e l l ?

Anyway as I understand it there are so many human diseases because of dense sedentary populations. Not karma but an unintended consequence of civilization. Which is of course made possible in part by agriculture and animal domestication.

You gotta admit though, a karma-oriented worldview would find your comments very agreeable and not the least surprising.

Except, of course, or the "unintended" part.

I agree. I just don't believe in karma.
