  • Desert Storm 20th anniversary

Today February 28, 2011 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first Gulf War, more commonly known as Operation Desert Storm. A coalition led by the United States and Great Britain with a United Nations-authorized coalition force of 34 nations started to reclaim Kuwait, which had been invaded by Iraqi forces led by Saddam Hussein in August 1990. The aerial assault started on Jan. 17, 1991. This was followed by a ground assault that began on Feb. 23, 1991, and lasted less than 100 hours before coalition forces achieved the strategic victory, ending the first Persian Gulf War.

    Fatalities

"U.S. battle deaths among the 532,000 Americans included 122 from the army and Marines (35 to friendly-fire) and 131 non-combat fatalities.

The navy losses were 6 and 8; in the air force 20 were killed in action and 6 in other deaths."

Uwe, I remember you had said sometime in the past that you had been involved in this one. In some sort of professional and official capacity.

I had been also, but not in the military. Almost in a bizarre sort of way.

As the military had not been keeping its staff up to the usual numbers given no real large actions in the previous years, they were coming up on this invasion of Kuwait, and they had been short on physicians of various specialties. So they, in a behind the scenes sort of way, approached various medical boards of which they had been short staffed, and had asked for volunteers. One of the groups of physicians that they desperately needed, were Critical Care Medicine (ICU) specialists. I had been asked, and had volunteered, for this civilian group. I and one of my professors were in the first volunteer group of ICU docs to go, in case the casualties were more than the military physicians could handle. Fortunately, the war was over relatively shortly, with minimal casualties. I never had to go on that trip to the Middle East.

Given the current state of affairs, I doubt I'll ever go.

My wife and myself are both veterans of this one. That was our last military endeavour.
