Bummer. And here I thought we had a girl among us (mom excepted). All these pubescent wanna be monk teenagers could have fun with one here.

Yes, there is a distinct lack of females.

          Ladies, show yourselves.

The instructor that forbid half his students to spar, and half not. How long did they train to get there blackbelt? Did they work just as hard? Did they focus on forms?

One thing too, is I think the breathing technique is good for sparring. Why? Well sometimes I have gotten winded in sparring. You don't know when you will have to move really fast becuase someone else through something unexpectated at you.

One thing my instructor said. The first 30 seconds of a fight, usually determine the winner of it. So while points aren't necessarily good, there is a good reason for sparring.

re Dogchow108- I usually see two man forms and light sparring used to train the technique against a live "opponent" invariably a teacher level member of the school. Techniques appear to be more quickly learned this way, although my own research indicates few source materials are still available publically.

It really depends on who you're taking from. "external" TCMA usually dont this this that much. As far as Chinese MA, i've mostly seen this kind of stuff in internal MA- drills and such, that is.

But, generally you see a lot of this drill-training in non-Chinese MA. Krav maga is huge on it. Japanese MA like aikido and jiujitsu are pretty good about it too. All these pretty much lack forms as far as i know.

agreed about who we're taking it from- the two schools here both teach two man sets, and the library here at JHU has a couple of classics on two man variations, niether of which appears to be available, at least for the past 5 years I've been helling about on campus. I'm not sure where you are, but we've got limited resources in Baltimore. I try to catch the two conventions they usually have here, and sometimes pay the freight for a ten day lesson or so with a teacher at those- Can't talk much about Krav Maga, the Israelis never taught us that in basic, they used something else. My understanding is that it's a good fight style, but no-one around here as Afaik has entered any of the open comps. I personally enjoy the 2 man sets, Since some of the Ta lu make no sense to me until then. Then again, I'll never be able to claim I'm the brightest bulb around here either. Research does seem to indicate that 2 man sets are extant for most MA's though. It's just a matter of tracking down a teacher that knows them.
