  • Fire risks in Asia

You have to always keep in mind, that the fire regulations in Asia do not compare with those found in western countries. Or, more clearly stated, don't expect any sort of fire regulations in facilities in Asia... The following article clearly demonstrates this; there's a lesson to be learned from this.

PHUKET: A pre-dawn blaze at the popular Tiger Bar and Discotheque in Phuket has left four people dead and 11 people injured.

Among the injured were four French nationals.

Kathu Police were notified of the blaze at the well-known Patong nightspot at about 4am.

Patong Municipality Fire Department rescuers raced to the scene with eight fire engines. It took them about one hour to extinguish the fire.

The firefighters had to battle the blaze in the darkness, as power had to be cut throughout the municipality for safety reasons.

Kathu Police said that the cause of the fire appears to have been related to an explosion in an electrical transformer.

The identities of the four dead have not yet been released; all were burned beyond recognition.
There are two things to remember when getting into crowded facilities in Asia; the following two comments about this news article clearly identify them:

Over the years we have found many venues [maybe including this one] have either no fire escapes or the fire escapes are chained closed. Unfortunately it falls on deaf ears as the attitude seems "it wont happen to us".

I stood there when the fire started. the first firefighter came after more than 40 minutes, then they needed again 15 minutes to start the water gun! The 2nd car came 10 minutes later - horrible!

Don't expect proper fire codes in Asia; don't expect any codes, if they exist, to be followed; don't expect emergency services to be prompt, or competent. Always know where the nearest functioning exits are (and "functioning" is important, as many exits are locked for security purposes), and tend to stay near them.
