Training Gong Fu / Hung Gar in Beijing

Hi Russbo crew!

Been a while since I posted, but I’m here once more asking for the benefit of your wisdom!

Rather than going straight to a full time school (not enough $$$ unfortunately) I’m changing my plans and I’m going to teach in Beijing for a year

I want to train while I’m there – and what I’m looking for is somewhere to learn Traditional CMA – Hung Gar / Gong Fu NOT WUSHU !!!!

Have I got any chance of finding a school to teach me there – or am I too far north / too foreign?

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Good luck. I know of nothing up there. The Beijing university has an absolutely stellar gong fu program, but it is wushu intensive, as is most training up there. I could hook you up with some really good sanda training, as Decheng's brother has a school in Beijing. (He has been China's number one sanda champion for nine year straight, a while back)

Yongxin had some sort of shaolin thing going on in Beijing two years ago when I was last there; some sort of theatrical thing with wushu. You know, performances, make money, etc. I guess he hasn't figured out that there's money to be made in teaching the stuff. He may have added a school up there, but I'm not familiar with any.

Have fun in Beijing. Interesting city. The growth is absolutely phenomenal. Not much of a night life to speak of, but, a fabulous place to spend time in. Be aware, that more than likely, if you spend any sort of time there, you will most probably develop some degree of chronic bronchitis. The pollution and dust is horrible.

I don't know if you have to be a member of the university to take wushu classes, but, it's worth checking out. They have incredible training, and their team is top notch.

As for Decheng's brother, I'll try to get in touch with him. Decheng is on his way back from Europe, to arrive China on Dec 10. He wants to come to Vegas to visit me in January (I have to work on that; however, after the Xingwei episode, my luck with visas for Asians is absolute shit. Failed today trying to get a US visa for my Thai girlfriend. Not sure I'll be successful with Decheng....)

I think that you'll find Beijing to be an incredible city. I've been watching it evolve over the past twelve years. Truly some fantastic changes, but, unfortunately with all of the good, comes some more of the bad (pollution, traffic). You'll enjoy it.

although i'm not really a fan of beijing, or nothern china for that matter, i do hope to get myself back there for the 2008 olympics....

dunno nothin about peking but umm..the best hung ga is in malaysia and hong kong. tai wan has some ill hung styles aswell but your best bet would probably be hong kong

but if you dont have strong feelings for hung kuen you probably dont care

to be honest though I actually want to train something involving real combat

do you have details of Decheng's brothers school?

No decent CMA schools where I've been living this year so I've just been training Muay Thai love it! never had such bruised legs though LOL

The place to go for real gung fu

Im currently studying with an awesome master in Shandong province, China. He's a mantis specialists and incorporates bagua, taichi and other styles. He's also a chi gung specialist. I've trained with a few masters in different schools in China and he is by far and away the best. Seriously man - u should check him out if you're serious about gong fu!
