I don't know if your digestive track could even see the difference between the flowers.
Well, to put it bluntly, it can.

People with the inherited Celiac disease (Celiac Sprue) have a horrible gluten intolerance, more specifically, an intolerance to proteins that have high concentrations of proline and glutamine. Gluten is a generic term for the proteins that are found in grains. There are a few different types of proteins, each slightly different depending the "flower" that it comes from: secalin (rye), gliadin (wheat), zein (corn), oryzenin (rice), etc. The proteins in wheat, rye, barley, and oats, not only have higher amounts of glutamine and proline, but they have these amino acids in a specific manner which seems to trigger an auto immune response in the small intestine.

When these proteins are seen by the absorbing mechanisms of the small intestine, the body, which seems to be sensitized to these proteins, triggers an immune response. Antibodies, vasoactive stubstances, white blood cells, tunor necrosis factor, etc, congregate in the villi of the small intestine to fight these proteins, and end up destroying the absorbing apparatus of the small intestine instead. This destruction ends up resulting in malabsorption of nutrients, with subsequent effects of that.

It usually is discovered in children, at least, hopefully is, before the effects of malnutrition manifest themselves in reduced mental and physical growth.

I found two photos on the net of small intestine villi. As you can see from "villi", the small intestine has a lot of folds and ridges which slow down and "grab" digesting food particles (from pancreatic enzymes, gastric and oral juices), and eventually absorb them. They are basically little hair like fingers, full of blood vessels, which slowly absorb the small parts, such as protein chains, of broken down food into the bloodstream. the image "EMvilli", is an electon microscopy image of villi, which easily demonstrates the finger like appendages of the small intestine wall, or, the villi.

Firstly, as this is my first post, I would like to send a fond hello to all the people on this forum.

I have marginal experience with various diets, and the one that you described does not appear to be one that is detrimental. I would think that avoiding sources of protein such as meat and poultry is exceedingly good for anyone, let alone a young child. Of course, soy should not be the only source for protein. Seeds and nuts, as well as fish should definitely be given to the child, especially at his young age. Fish have oils in them that assist in the creation of a healthy neutrological system.

As far as everything else goes, I think it seems proper. I have been taught that it is good to separate the mixtures of carbohydrates and protein that you have. Ultimately, you would want to have 3 meals in the day. One solely Protein, One solely carbohydrates, and one with a firm mixture of the two. Fruit should *always* be eaten separate from other foods, because it is already pre-digested before you eat it, and if mixed with other foods, would simply cause you to exert more energy to digest your food. Energy which would thus not be able to be used on the battlefield (or for a 7 year old, the play ground). The same thing occurs when you drink liquids with your meal.

As far as his illnesses... if she is insistent upon giving the child a healthy diet, perhaps there are facets of his life that she is completely neglecting. Medicines? Bad Feng Shui? I would think it would be more appropriate to tell the woman to consult a feng shui practitioner to map out her home, before suggesting that the kid's diet is inadequate. Although reccommending more sources of protein is good, I would highly reccommend not introducing red meat to his diet. It would probably be more detrimental at this point than positive. Of course, my experience in diets is marginal at best. I would reccommend the following text to be consulted.

The Tao of Long Life: By Chee Soo. There is quite a large amount about diet and illnesses in the book, and perhaps some of it can be of use.

Thanks for the info on the food combining angle, doc. Still would like your input on the blood type diet, if you have knowledge to share there.

The boy has expressed a desire to train an additional class per week. I talked with his mom for a while - nothing confrontational at all, just trying to learn more about their lifestyle. He's getting approximately 1000 calories a day.

My understanding is that a more reasonable daily intake would be between 20-30kcals/lb, (he weighs 58). I didn't express this to her directly but did suggest that the current intake might be a bit low for days that he is playing sports or training and that she should discuss her dietary methods with her pediatrician. She seemed to take that to heart and I hope she follows through with it.

                  I appreciate everyone's comments

                      yea.

rearranging the furniture will change how much good fuel the kid gets. I see it all the time.

Well, there are other contributing factors to lowered immunity and frequent colds besides diet. For instance, what's the weather like in the area, does the kid frequently sleep near an open window, have a history of respiratory ailments, or local/indoor pollution. However, diet is a significant factor.

I don't really buy into the restrictive diet theory. It results in some digestive insufficiencies. However it's not entirely unfounded. For example, fruit is best eaten on its own. However, one mildly restrictive diet that has been well proven in its effectiveness, is eating kosher.

Every teacher in my med school whom i've asked about the blood type diet says its utter bullshit.

And as for the caloric intake, you're right, make sure he gets more food every day. An adolescent or young adult can burn upwards of 700 calories in an hour of hard martial arts training. He should be getting a bit more than 1000 per day. And make sure he gets plenty of meat, but stay away from fish with high levels of heavy metals.
Show me a man who has forgotten words, so that I can have a word with him.

                          I've looked at it.

It's utterly amazing bullshit, not at all based upon any commonly accepted longstanding scientific facts.

I'm sure this idiot is going to make a fortune. There are sooooo many stupid people in the world.

                            Thanks guys,

Doc, I'd love to quote you to her, but I don't think that exact phrasing will go over very well.

here's one article debunking the blood type diet, although it's got an anti-meat bias:
                            http://www.vegsource.com/articles/blood_hype.htm

on the 'eat right 4 your type' website (promoting the diet), they actually talk for a long time about leptins and cell proteins before they mention the tests were done on pigeon cells. Pigeons.

From Peter D'Adamo, the creator of this diet:

Eating this way can not only keep you healthy and help you lose weight, D'Adamo says, but not eating this way can harm you, perhaps setting you up for digestive problems or serious ailments, including cancer.

So he tells the gullible that they'll get cancer if they DONT follow his diet? What a load. This guy should be arrested and forced to eat nothing but M&Ms and clammato juice.

Anyway, we talked again last night and she asked about supplementation, and I said "he gets healthy food now, just give him a little more of it". I'll see her again on Thursday and will suggest she have her pediatrician look into the blood type thing.

                            Thanks y'all.

You can quote me to her. In fact, feel free to print out what's coming and let her read it.

Sorry for the delay, I've been swamped with bullshit of my own. For some reason, it follows me.

                                some reason ha???? lol..........

Doc is right though. This is potentially a high charged issue for alot of ppl. Paricularly when you have ppl with different religious beliefs , lifestyles, budget, information, education and maturity and reasoning capacity "competing" information and logic against each other. You can argue against their choices all you like, but realistically, unless someone approaches you in some capacity for help or you can drop it casually and have them hear it, or again unless they're putting themselves in personal danger because of it, or if wher children are concerned you want to file and defend claim to a neglect and abuse report, you really have little grounds to do a whole lot of much. It's sad sometimes that ppl have to grow only through their own experience and despite your own wealth of sense and knowledge , they refuse to take heed............but that there is life and that is free will and the right to have it !
Modify as would for for the big kid . ............. but reverse........
