but seriously, dragons from the East don't have wings, you know? It's only when dragons sailed to the West that they grew wings, so, in Chinese there is no character for a "western dragon," meaning those that can fly. However, while on a pilgrimage i once came across a man who combined the Chinese character for dragon with the character for flying. He created a character that is representitive of our western dragons that fly. Now that was a day of wonder and marvel!! How ingenious!!!
To answer your question seriously, no. I haven't been to China, but nearly every Chinese MA teacher I've come across or heard of in the West has acknolwedged that the dragon is a mythical creation. The important thing isn't whether or not they actually existed, but what they represent to the MA student.
There obviously is, as you have pointed out, evidence for dinosaurs. But dinosaurs didn't have magical powers and talk to humans, or in fact interact with humans at all, because they were separated from humans by around 65 million years. So where dragon myths came from is open to speculation.
