There are some known problems with QuickTime video streaming, some of which I don't understand. Generally, it works, and it works well. Some important issues, however, that you should keep in mind.
We hope you enjoy them. There are many, many more currently being edited, produced, converted, and tested, prior to their release on this forum.
- If you are behind a firewall, you will need to open port 554 and or 7070. Some personal firewalls can be adjusted to open for QuickTime streaming (they open port 554) via software and web browser. If you are behind a corporate firewall, you'll need to have your network administrator open up that port.
- There is an option in QuickTime player, under Preferences / Registration, that is called "Streaming Transport". We do not stream these videos on port 80; therefore, if the port 80 box is checked, it will not work. Make sure that port 554 is checked. If you use the AutoConfigure button to automatically check for a firewall, and "suggest" a setting, you might get the wrong information. Unfortunately, if you are behind a firewall, the AutoConfigure button will suggest port 80, which, will not work, as we are not streaming the video on port 80. You need to have this set on port 554, and have your network administrator open that port in the firewall.
- As far as connection speeds go, (Again, Edit/Preferences/Registration/Connection /Speed), we are streaming, preferably, at 256 kpbs DSL/Cable. It is best that you set your QuickTime player to that setting, if you are on a DSL or Cable line. If you are on a 56kbps dial up modem, set your connection speed to that. But, chances are, even though we have optimized these videos to stream under most conditions, a 56kpbs modem might not be fast enough. A fast internet connection is important.
- Sometimes you will notice that the QuickTime video box will open, with it's controls, but that nothing happens when you click the "Play" arrow button. Sometimes only audio will be heard, without any video. There are a few things that you can try if this occurs. First, refresh your browser page, and allow the QuickTime Player to reload, then try clicking the "start" arrow again. If this does not work, try letting the player download the entire file; ie, allow it to play, even though you don't see anything. Once the player has played the entire file, ie, QuickTime has cached the entire file, try rewinding it and playing it again. If you are still unsuccessful, come back and try again later. The server might be overloaded with requests, or, the gods of the internet might not be happy at that time.
- Try using a computer that has a faster video card, or a computer that has a video card with more ram memory. Laptops tend to be more unreliable than desktops when it comes to receiving streamed media.
- These files work, as they have all underwent extensive preparation and testing, but they are subject to all the various nuances and difficulties found on the internet. If you are unsuccessful in viewing any of these, please be patient and try again.
