haha, its not just the rules. if i remember right this all started with the oncoming of the black death back in the middle ages, the church was suggesting that it was the work of god and all those people beleived it, and prasied more but still no difference. there were also some special religois christian sects that were created and who would where thorns, chastity belts, whip themselves, and there wasn't a cure. people followd the rules of the church (laziness is a sin, and all that crap).

eventually people weren't listening to the church and the church had to finally turn to the enlightened ones(scientific comunity) for answeres, and well it started helping, the church forgot to mention that all that help came from scientist and recredited themselves.
