Just in case you were missing Phuket, here's a humdinger of a story, from last night. From the Phuket Gazette, well, part of the story anyway...

PHUKET: A Patong tuk-tuk driver questioned by police has denied any involvement in the alleged rape of a 21-year-old British female tourist in Phuket early on Monday morning.

The woman went to Bangla Road with friends on Sunday night but later separated from them and went to another bar alone, said Kathu Police Duty Officer Jakkrapong Luang-aon.

“She hired a tuk-tuk driver to take her back to her hotel in Cherng Talay at about 2:30am, but instead she was taken to an isolated place near Tri Trang Beach [in the opposite direction to the south of Patong],” said Capt Jakkrapong.

“There was another man sitting in the front cab of the tuk-tuk with the driver,” he added.

The woman reported that after the tuk-tuk driver stopped the vehicle, the other man exited the cab and allegedly robbed her by holding a knife to her throat.

“The woman said she could not remember anything after that until she regained consciousness in the morning,” said Capt Jakkrapong.

“When she woke, she found her underpants beside her and, [according to her], the tuk-tuk driver was still at the scene,” he added.

The woman told police that she was frightened, dressed quickly, and raced off to find help, but the tuk-tuk driver allegedly chased after her.

Reaching the road, she waved down passing motorists and got a lift back to her hotel, Capt Jakkrapong said.

“She reported the incident to Cherng Talay Police later after noticing internal pain when she got back to her hotel. They referred the case to Kathu Police as the alleged incident occurred in Patong,” he added.

“We have questioned the tuk-tuk driver, but he has denied any involvement and said he had no recollection of the events,” he said.

Police are now seeking the man who allegedly robbed the woman.

Well, according to a friend of mine who is friends with the British consul here, there's more....

The woman ran away from the tuk tuk driver later that morning by running into the nearby woods, where she got attacked by a group of dogs.

After fighting those dogs off, she eventually made it to another roadway, where she got mugged by a lady boy.

Then, she found some other people, who helped her get back to her hotel in Laguna. She subsequently then contacted the Cherngtalay police.

Keep this in mind the next time you think you're having a bad night.

The problem is, they think that a "country like Thailand" is just some safe little island paradise full of really nice smiling people.

Problem is, it's not. Especially with the economy getting worse worldwide; the trickle down effects are affecting the local populace here.

Here Maestro, talking about illegals and your relative distance from them, here's a little tidbit from Fox News (yes, I know you love them) about the top five safe havens for illegal immigrants in the US.

New Haven Conn was one of them:

Gives you something to think about while you're down there in Malaysia, watching the time go by before your inevitable return to the US.

just read up about that a little bit, its an interesting program, im curious if it has to do with international students going to yale more then anything, or maybe an effort to stop some crime against immigrants, atleast thats what i got from the mayors office article i just read

really, its not that there arent immigrants in CT i mean, there are, but not really the same as what you described.

the schools are top notch and i havent heard of any of the bullshit we talked about or like the article you posted, espcially in southern ct(where im from)

really, as small a state as we are and the number of people living in it, per capita our crime is i believe the lowest in the country, technically, some states have less but are actually BIGGER states by far, we're one of the smallest and have a decent population.

so as long as it remains a good place to live...i dont really care who lives there because its america after all...all of our ancestors are immigrants, well cept for the native americans.

the biggest problem i see with this immigration and the u.s. is the facts we talked about, uneducated, unwilling to assimilate, violent people. these types are seeming to make up the MAJORITY from what im hearing, although like i said;

going to the movies is always pleasant for me lolo
the schools are great(public)..private of course but the rich kids can be worse then any mexican drug mafia
and crime is relatively low, although...again its america lol, guns and stupid people are everywhere

Two things about Alaska you might want to know if you ever go there Doc. 1) In the 10 years I lived there, I never saw any place there that wasn't just mind-bogglingly beautiful. 2) The bars are only required to be closed from 5am to 8 am. It can be a little unsettling walking out of a bar at 3am and it's still daylight, the first few times anyway.

Just as unsettling as walking into a bar at 3PM, when it is totally dark outside. (I assume Alaska is similar to Iceland, which I've been to many years ago) Kind of freaky to barely see the sun at noon just peeking over the horizon for an hour and a half or so. But I do know that it's just really gorgeous up there, and, it's also a good place for allergies; supposedly, there are no blooming plants up there, making it a haven for allergy sufferers. Probably not so much a haven for single men though, I've heard that the ratio of men to women are ten to one.

One girl from Alaska that I knew years ago (from Hooters, damn cute little thing that ended up dating one of the Las Vegas judges, then screwed up that relationship because she decided to "get found" and do some porno films; another story...) told me that she had loved living up there. Said "you don't date the guys, you just make them get on line..." Well, up to you to decide what that meant.
