Today February 28, 2011 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first Gulf War, more commonly known as Operation Desert Storm. A coalition led by the United States and Great Britain with a United Nations-authorized coalition force of 34 nations started to reclaim Kuwait, which had been invaded by Iraqi forces led by Saddam Hussein in August 1990. The aerial assault started on Jan. 17, 1991. This was followed by a ground assault that began on Feb. 23, 1991, and lasted less than 100 hours before coalition forces achieved the strategic victory, ending the first Persian Gulf War.
