  • The real question is wether you have this burning desire to learn from a "Monk" or you want a good Shifu? What do you want to learn, how to be a Bhuddist Monk or do you wish to learn Shaolin Wushu? My Shifu is not a monk, does not claim to be a monk, does not wish to be a Monk. He teaches Shaolin Wushu, has trained with several "Monks", and other Masters. He has also trained and actually stayed in the temple, (Yes, stayed there in a Monk cubicle not in Dengfeng at a school), and counts Deyang as a Shifu. I have trained with him for 5 years, and though I do look forward to a trip to Henan Province so I can have some more experiences like Doc here, I see no great advantage in learning directly from a "Certified Monk" at my level.
Find a good teacher somewhere that will give you a good foundation in Wushu, worry about a "Certified monk" later.

Holy Necroposts batman! Sorry did not look at the dates saw January 9 and FUBARed the rest! This is in reply to the first post, wooopsie!

    • Trust me.

You don't want too many "experiences like doc here..."

what if you want to learn shaolin wushu from a buddhist monk who is a good teacher?

a buddhist monk rarely teaches others how to be a monk. some teach shaolin wushu.

My point was why look for a small minority of teachers when their are good teachers out there more readily available.

I will mention a name that is not revered here, and though my eyes are open, I am also aware of the true nature of the connection.
One of Mario Salazar's teachers is Xiang Yang Liu or Shi De Ru so the connection was there for Mario to travel to and stay at the temple and train under Shi De Yang as well as meet Great Master Su Xi. I trained and worked under Master Liu for several years and while I missed the oppurtunities to train with Shi De Yang due to being out of the country working for Uncle Sugar my wife did train with him as well. Shifu Salazar and I have a school in Tampa and stick to a Shaolin curriculum as much as training here in the states will allow.
I'm not starting a discussion on Master Liu, he is mentioned to show the connection.

              • so you have an uncle named sugar?

i suppose it's not uncommon for taiwanese/chinese etc. to name themselves "candy." pretty funny, yes, but still not uncommon. i've even come across a middle aged man recently named RAINBOW, who just so happened to want to fix me up with his daughter.

                but sugar? nope...that's a first.

                  Not true.

Deru and I are close friends.

thats cool. and shi deru is cool too as far as i'm concerned. he's one of the family heads.

i recognize that name shifu salazar from the youtube videos. there's one of him doing dahongquan. and just recently the description was updated saying "learned from shi deyang in china", which it didnt use to say.. but thats not the way shi deyang does or teaches the form.

i'd guess he learned it from shi deru or one of the coaches at shi deyang's school- they do their moves differently sometimes.

shi deru is under shi suxi. he lives and teaches in the u.s. now and is the only shaolin school i know of that has a sanda team, holds and enters tournaments. which i think is cool.

                            • thanks LFJ! this is the guy i read a lot about him. Is he all they say he is? the iron leg and all? Tell me about his fighting skill please. They say he trained with shi dejian- did he? is he a fighter? does he know xinyiba?

                              • i've personally never met him. but as far as i know, he is a disciple under shi suxi- therefore a brother to others in shi suxi family, such as shi deyang, shi dejian, etc..

having never met him i only know the stories. "iron leg" is what they call him. he runs the sanda team, but i've never seen him compete or perform. i know he has also studied internal arts elsewhere besides shaolin.

this is what a student of his posted on another message board:

We recently gave a demonstration at a local college. We had the usual demo of hard qigong, along with forms. However, what my shifu demonstrated was awesome but I do not understand how it is possible. He extinguished candles with no touch no motion towards the candle just by emitting his qi. When I asked him about this he said that its nothing special, and that many people can do it. He said merely by entering a room he can extinguish the candles inside, do you guys know anything about this phenomenon?
                                awaiting videos.
