How do you stop a man unafraid of death who beleives he is fighting for god? Smile at him and tell him you cannot fight your brother. If he attacks you, hug him and continue to smile. To offer military resistance and to further oppress the islamic community only fuels extremist terrorist groups.

True. The more you oppress them, the more extreme they will become.

As with everything else, to a point.

I don't believe that these types of people respond well to love and caring. I think they respond better to force.

Napoleon Bonaparte had conquered this region previously, and temporarily, in 1798. And he had an interesting way of controling the local Arab populace.

He had his soldiers bring him thirty heads a week.

Didn't have much trouble at all. That is, until the English, and a plague, arrived.

"We were continually harassed by bands of Arabs - Arabs are the biggest thieves in the world and the wickedest folk on the earth, who will equally kill a Turk or a Frenchman, indeed anything which comes into their hands. Brigade General Muireur and several aides-de-camp and staff officers were murdered by these wretches. They are always there, hiding behind dykes or in trenches and mounted on their excellent ponies, ready to ambush - woe to anyone who goes more than a hundred paces from the column. General Muireur, despite the remonstrations of the whole guard, wished to go alone (with that fated inevitability which I have often noticed accompanies those who have reached their last hour) to a small hill about 200 paces from the camp. There were three Bedouin behind it and they killed him. The Republic suffered a serious loss - he was one of the bravest generals I have ever known".

Yes doc, no trouble at all. It worked so well noone in the middle east would ever think to hurt a european person....... particularly a frenchmen.

Now given, the love and caring technique would still have casuties at first. But if those first few people who tried it out could still shower love upon the terrorists after they'd been ripped apart by bullets, eventually the message would get through.

Military force will only perpetuate the conflict. So will a western dictator using the words "crusade against evil" in a speech which is played on arab TVs. Talk about a horrible choice of words. Middle eastern folks are awfully sensitive about the term "crusade" and with good reason.

Hey I've got an idea. Why don't we not only invade the entire middle east, but colonize it with displaced europeans, kill anyone who resists, and force the rest onto reservations in the most inhospitable plots of land we can find? Then as an act of contrition we'll let them build casinos all over Iraq two hundred years down the line. That will work right?

Sorry I'm a little bit jaded.

Frankly I wonder why Al Queda would bother blowing up civilians in a way which is most profitable to the U.S. government when it would be so much influential and challenging for them to just assasinate Bush, Cheney, and Ashcroft all on the same day. And rig the next election so Ralph Nader wins it.

Ok thats enough wishful thinking for the next year.

There is a great EarthCrisis quote that seems fitting to use right now, "Id rather live in a true state of war than a false state of piece."

              Great idea.

We can put them all in Las Vegas....

But seriously, talking about forcing the "rest" onto reservations in the most inhospitable plots of land. Don't you think the Arab world already did that with the Palestinians?

wow...the naivety of this thread is bewildering.

                i will say this, though....

"Dictator" Bush, as you can call him whatever you want to make urself feel "aware", will be in office 8 years tops and will constantly be under pressure from the whole world. The ppl he goes after stay in power until they die, and make choices unchallenged and unopposed by the people they leave alive. i dont see where you can even make a sincere comparison between the two.

if anything, i am more a fan of asassinations than of bombings, but hey u cant always satisfy the critics.

I don't think it's naive. People really have strong feelings about this. What fascinates me, is how polarized people are about this issue. There just doesn't seem to be a middle ground here.

President Bush says that he needs war to find peace,
                      but thats like saying,
you need to **** to find virginity!

                      ????

I wont even bother wasting my time explaining why such a statement is just so utterly foolish.

oh, and by the way, as far as the Geneva convention goes, they might as well forget it and do something new because the extent to which it has been ignored by this disgusting yet almost completely uncriticized Tryant is just unbelievable. by the way, just to make it clear, i meant asassinating Saddam Hussein.

i understand the idea behind the statement but its simply naiive. look, if someone simply kills and kills and kills and starts wars and uses them as excuses to promote other wars, and violates international laws fighting yet OTHER wars, no one does anything, i think it is simply unforgivable to let that continue.

to be honest, i dont really care much for Iraq or its people at all. that is honesty from me to you- i just dont care for them. when i see a crowd of Iraqis tearing down the Saddam statue that does absolutely nothing to me other than make me thnk that if it were an israeli who suddenly got teleported over there they'd do the same thing, because public lynchings are not only typical events in these countries, but they are also a good example of how you dont need to be a "fanatic" to engage in violence like this; its simply the common people.

i think that if the US had simply gone into Iraq saying look, saddam we gave you your 12-year warning but now its time to get rid of you- that would be just fine with me. i think that at this point it makes a joke out of us to even bother trying to justify getting rid of this guy using international law, since Saddam's regime has made itself infamous by ignoring anything remotely resembling such law.
not only that, but people have to realize that we have not really made such a drastic peace-war change in Iraq. Iraq was, in NO WAY, at peace. it was still technically at war with other powers. the US authorities say that Saddam hussein was either in posession of or trying to get WMD, you know what ill trust the US's intelligence on saddam before i'll trust some bull**** news analyst's opinion. if we have to wait for Saddam to use WMD, then i think we have failed as an intelligent species.

as for people dying--people were dying before the US went in, you just never heard of it-- but dont worry that will come out plenty when the trial(s) start(s).

                            well..

well, i personally dont care that much, i mean i cared back when the somalians drug corpses through the streets..and when the towers fell, and even now when innocent soliders are getting capped every day..but not so much, its just overwhelming to think about this **** all the time, and its quite obvious to me now that the killing is never gonna stop, the dark has its place just as the light does, its the way of the universe

That hasn't been my impression of the Israeli's that I've met. They may have strong beliefs, but they don't seem to lose sight of reality with them.
